Today, Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal said that he is not ready to recognize Israel as a Jewish state and went on to say that under Israeli occupation, Israel and a state of Palestine could not coexist in peace.
Meshaal said that the only way peace could be achieved is if "Israel practically commits itself to withdraw from Gaza completely and the West Bank without any settlements, and if we have Jerusalem as our capital and the return of the refugees".
Additionally, Meshaal expressed his frustration with the way the international community for supporting the security of Israel rather than lifting the occupation on the Palestinians. Meshaal claimed that the occupation of the Palestinians was the "last occupation in the world".
One of the more disturbing things that Meshaal said in an interview was that he was determined enough to expel the Israelis from Gaza by force, no matter how many Palestinians died in the process. He said that due to the abhorring nature of occupation, "every single Palestinian can die for the next generations to live in peace and freedom".
Statements like these really make me wonder about the true nature of a person's decisions to liberate their nation. Openly saying that one has no problem turning soldiers into martyrs makes it seem like the freedom cause is more of a personal vendetta because one is willing to sacrifice anything to defeat their opponent. This situation has escalated very quickly over the last few weeks, and needs to be resolved just as quickly.
