Nothing draws attention more than seeing a long standing comic book hero undergo an upgrade to change their gender.
The shocking (see what I did there) news from yesterday informed us all that Marvel Comics has decided to make Thor the God of Thunder into a female character. To be clear, Marvel has announced that this is not a lady Thor, this is the character of Thor with the same arsenal of powers and the same responsibilities as her male counterpart. Thor is just now portrayed by a female.
Many were thunderstruck at this news yesterday (I feel terrible for that pun).
In the comics, Thor's hammer Mjolnir is inscribed with the words "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor", which seems to be limited to the character of Thor. But, reading into this inscription, it says that WHOEVER holds the hammer will possess the "power of Thor" as long as they are worthy.
I was always curious if the hammer was gender biased, but now it apparently is not.
This seems like a very creative and interesting idea for Marvel Comics because they are now trying to incorporate more females into their male-centered superhero universe. This will also certainly appeal to a wider range of female audiences, which will generate more popularity for this particular comic.
Well, probably nothing for the next couple years because Thor actor Chris Hemsworth is under contract for "Thor 3" and "The Avengers 3", so he's definitely not going anywhere.
However, Marvel Studios is now incredibly aware of the female Thor's implications and may push for a female Thor film.
That might not come to pass until after 2018, however.
Still, it would be fairly awesome to see a female Thor headbutting a dent into Iron Man's helmet.
